Board Certification

Start your pathway to American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Fellowship and become board certified in occupational medicine through
the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).  

General Requirements of Board Certification

 
  • Medical License: An unrestricted and currently valid license(s) to practice medicine in a state, the District of Columbia, a territory, commonwealth, or possession of the United States or in a province of Canada is required. If the applicant has licenses in multiple states, no license may be restricted, revoked, or suspended or currently under such notice.
  • Medical Degree: Graduation from a medical school in the United States which at the time of the applicant’s graduation was accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, a school of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association, an accredited medical school in Canada, or from a medical school located outside the United States and Canada that is deemed satisfactory to the Board is required.
  • Graduate Coursework: At least 15 total equivalent hours of graduate level courses are required in the core coursework areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, health services administration and environmental health sciences. The minimum 15 credit hours of coursework should appropriately reflect the 5 content areas listed above to ensure applicants are well grounded in foundational public health knowledge and should be graduate level courses. Courses that may include multiple content areas must meet the equivalent academic requirements and content of the traditional individual courses. Undergraduate courses and course work in medical school will not be considered to meet these requirements.

Maintenance of Certification 

MOC (Maintenance of Certification) is the board certification process for assessment of continuing competencies of physicians. The ABPM MOC program continues to evolve to meet American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) requirements.
Part 1  

Professionalism and Professional Standing: Hold an active, valid and unrestricted medical license in all states, US territories, or Canadian provinces in which you are licensed to practice medicine. 

Part 2  

Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (LLSA): Complete continuing medical education and self-assessment activities in areas related to your practice. These include ABPM-approved courses as well as patient safety courses. View ABPM-approved LLSA courses.* 

Part 3 

Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment and Skills: Pass a cognitive exam during each certification cycle. The exam will contain similar content to the initial certification exam. View MOC Exam Information. 

Part 4  

Improvement in Medical Practice: Complete two Improvement in Medical Practice (IMP) activities. One of the activities must be completed through a Preventive Medicine specialty or subspecialty society (ACOEM, ACPM, AMIA, AsMA, UHMS).* 

ABPM is a participant in the ABMS Multispecialty Portfolio Program. Activities completed through the program will be accepted. Learn more about the ABMS Multispecialty Portfolio Program

*Diplomates completing MOC Parts 2 and 4 requirements for another ABMS Member Board may request reciprocal credit. 

The ABPM certifies physicians in three specialties: Occupational Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, General and Preventive Medicine
